Elbow Arthritis
Although the elbows are not weight-bearing joints, they are considered to be most important for the functioning of the upper limbs. Hence, even minor trauma or disease affecting the elbow may cause pain and limit the movements of the upper limbs.
Elbow Pain
The elbow is a hinge joint made up of 3 bones – humerus, radius and ulna. The bones are held together by ligaments to provide stability to the joint. Muscles and tendons move the bones around each other and help in performing various activities. Nerves pass through the joint. Damage to these structures can cause elbow pain
Elbow Injuries
Fracture is a common injury to the elbow. Elbow fractures may result from a fall onto an outstretched wrist, a direct impact to the elbow or a twisting injury. Elbow fractures may cause severe pain, swelling, tenderness and painful movements.
Elbow Fractures
Three bones, the humerus, radius and ulna, make up the elbow joint. Elbow fractures may occur from trauma, resulting from various reasons; a fall on an outstretched arm, a direct blow to the elbow, or an abnormal twist to the joint beyond its functional limit.
Elbow Contracture
Elbow contracture refers to a stiff elbow with limited range of motion. It is a common complication following elbow surgery, fractures, dislocations and burns. The normal functional range of motion for an elbow is 30-145 degrees.

When should you come in for elbow pain?
Most patients should come in and see a specialist for their ailment of either their shoulder or their elbow after they've gone through, usually a kind of home regiment, rice therapy, rest, ice, compression, or elevation, depending on what the injury is.
And if it doesn't get better after that, usually a week, maybe two weeks if they've hurt themselves and they aren't feeling better. It may be more than just a simple strain or sprain that needs to be treated differently or injected or have advanced imaging on to see if they can figure out what's going on and hopefully get them back to the quality of life and activities they want.
What’s a common elbow injury we see?
The most common elbow ailment that our Ortho San Antonio Physicians see is typically tennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis, which is an inflammation of the tendons on the outside of the elbow. It's a common thing to have, you don't have to play tennis to get it. It happens a lot with other racquet sports, golfers, and anybody that uses their upper extremities for a significant amount of activity. Commonly it's self-limited, meaning it gets better if we did absolutely nothing. We like to try to help decrease the discomfort, whether that's through braces or physical therapy injections. There is also a couple of procedures that can be done typically in the operating room that are small but are operations that have had good results. And typically, those patients have not responded to other types of treatment without surgery. And that's when we consider doing this procedure.
