Ortho SA Joint Injection Clinic
The injection clinic here at Ortho SA is specifically designed just for injections, so it helps us fast-track patients that just need those injections. It's normal to have some soreness after the injection and recommended to avoid any strenuous activities two days after the procedure.
the TYPE OF INJECTIONS WE OFFER AT ORTHO SAN ANTONIO ARE Cortisone, PRP, Orthobiologics, & MORE.
Cortisone Injections
As a corticosteroid, cortisone is released by the adrenal gland in response to stress and is a potent anti-inflammatory agent.
Who is a cortisone candidate?
Cortisone injections are recommended for injuries causing pain and inflammation that don't require surgery. An example of such a condition is frozen shoulder.
Cortisone Injection Procedure
The affected joint is injected directly with artificial preparations containing cortisone to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. As a result of cortisone injections, these effects can last for several weeks.
Risks and Complications of Cortisone Injections
Injections of cortisone provide significant pain relief and inflammation relief; however, they are associated with certain adverse effects. The most common side effect is a “cortisone flare”, a condition where cortisone crystallizes and causes severe pain for a brief period that lasts for a day or two. Cortisone flare can be minimized by applying ice to the injected area. Other adverse effects include whitening of the skin and, infection at the injection site, a transient elevation in blood sugar if you are diabetic.
PRP INJECTIONS
What is PRP?
PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma which contains a lot of your body's growth factors that help promote healing and anti-inflammatory. This decreases a lot of pain in your joints or chronic injuries including your tendons and ligaments.
PRP VS. Orthobiologics
PRP and Orthobiologics are both very similar in that they both decrease pain and chronic conditions. The major difference is that Orthobiologics may be a bit more costly and a little bit more painful in obtaining.
PRP Systems offered at ortho sa
Arthrex ACP® Double-Syringe System
With Arthrex ACP, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can be prepared quickly and safely at the patient's point of care directly from a small blood sample. Based on clinical needs, PRP can be combined with autograft and allograft bone for use in orthopedic surgery.
ACP Max™ PRP System
With the ACP MaxTM system, 30 mL, 60 mL, or 90 mL of whole blood can be collected for the preparation of platelet-rich plasma (PRP). The buffy-coat system produces a PRP solution that is free of red blood cells and granulocytes, including neutrophils. As a result of the additional whole blood collected, ACP Max PRP achieves platelet concentrations up to 11 times greater than whole blood alone.
Angel® System
Fully automated, the Angel system utilizes a unique 3-sensor technology (3ST) and one-button automation to prepare customized platelet-rich plasma (PRP) formulations. Platelets can be concentrated up to 18 times with the Angel system's adjustable leukocyte levels. With flow cytometry, which measures light absorption by cells, it is possible to achieve precise and reproducible separations. A combination of PRP and autograft or allograft bone can be used at orthopedic sites.

AN INJECTION SUCCESS STORY
Ramy Noche, M.D., a sports medicine specialist, discusses his favorite success story of a young athlete who had a chronic elbow injury that wasn't healing with therapy alone. After doing a PRP injection in his elbow, he got back to throwing normally and was relieved of any pain. The PRP helped heal his UCL, which had a chronic tear in it.
