The Importance Of A Fellowship Trained Physician
We asked Dr. Travis Burns all about fellowships and why choosing a fellowship trained physician is always a good thing.
WHAT IS A FELLOWSHIP?
A fellowship is a program for a physician to become a specialist in their chosen field. For example, if an orthopedic physician wants to become an expert on the joints they would complete a fellowship training program in joint surgery. The fellowship involves the physician shadowing and mentoring with an expert in their given field and likely performing hundreds of specialized surgeries to receive their credentials. These fellowships are a one year program offered only to top students who have completed their 4 years of undergraduate, 4 years of medical school, and 5 years of residency.
WHAT DOES 'FELLOWSHIP TRAINED' MEAN FOR YOU AND YOUR ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON?
When reviewing physicians to find the right fit for you, you may have noticed a very unique credential that not all doctors possess: “Fellowship Trained” or “Fellow.” That’s because only after a rigorous decade of education only the most prestigious doctoral graduates are offered fellowships.
WHY CHOOSE A FELLOWSHIP TRAINED ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON?
These physicians are specialists in their field. They offer you comfort and peace of mind because they have additional training and experience in their specialty. As a patient, that means an increased chance for a successful outcome!
